Our Market History

You don’t get to be the oldest continuously operating public market in the USA without picking up a few tall (and not so tall) tales along the way. The history of Pike Place, or “The Market” as locals refer to it, is richly symbolic of the history of our entire great nation – a history full of betrayal and heroism and story of immigrants full of the hope and renewal that is the promise of the American dream.

There is a reason that “The Market,” as locals like to call Pike Place Market, is the oldest continuously operating and most historically authentic public market in the country. Established in 1907, it has thrived and it has been challenged, and reborn. We can thank our citizens of Seattle in 1971 who voted to establish this nine-acre area as a historical district, forever preserving its physical and social character as “The Soul of Seattle.“

Pike Place Market has been and will always be a place where the small business person can get a start, where the low income and elderly can make a home and where the word local means more than simply a marketing term.
We began by saying that Pike Place Market has become “The Soul of Seattle,” something you will gain a great appreciation for after your experience in touring with us. Yes, we’ll tempt you with all kinds of delicious bites but more importantly, as stewards of the Market, we’ll also share with you inspiring, heartfelt and funny stories about The Market’s unique past, where it is today and its plans for the future.
